These records include Book of Mortgages from 1860-1880, Probate Records from 1843-1932 and Index to Civil Suits from 1816-1818. To insure preservation of some of the county’s very early records, they are stored in a climate-controlled environment at State Archives. Until the turn of the century, most records in the clerk’s office were handwritten, many in French. Records maintained by the office of the clerk date back to the year 1770, when Ascension Parish was known as the “Second Acadian Coast”.
